Warrandyte resident confirms two attempts to purchase at Walmart using their credit card

One of the residents I know in Warrandyte mentioned they’d had two attempts by someone using their credit card at Walmart in the States. They’re now waiting for a replacement card which is inconvenient and means they have to contact businesses using direct debit. Not a good experience.

The resident had purchased items at Warrandyte IGA.

Please keep in mind this is not just happening at Warrandyte IGA but all over Australia. Similar incidents had occurred at McDonalds and McDonalds have since added greater physical security to their EFTPOS machines.

If a trader has an EFTPOS machine that is only connected via a single cable that can be easily removed, you should be careful. It is very easy for the device to be swapped with a device that can skim cards and no one is the wiser.

Do keep in mind that Warrandyte IGA is also a victim in this crime. It is easy to blame them but be tolerant. The criminals are very clever.

I’ve read that cards with chips are more secure than cards with magnetic stripes. I haven’t confirmed this. If in doubt you may wish to think about using cash, although that also opens up different risks.
